I originally wrote this one in 1991. It's a blues rock number influenced by ZZ Top with tongue-in-cheek lyrics. After I started working with Dreamtonics' Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro, I started looking around for other songs to re-produce. I found an old cassette containing a compilation of songs that I had written during that time. This one jumped out at me because it seemed both thematically and texturally consistent with the other songs on this page. Give it a listen and drop me a comment with your thoughts.

This is another new old song, but this one has a much more serious perspective. I originally wrote it in 1989 after a failed relationship. But I wanted the song to be more universal rather than personal. When a relationship ends, there are regrets, but there is also hope--hope for redemption; hope for growth.

Like many of the other songs on this page, the vocals are provided by Dreamtonics' Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro. With each new song that uses this tool, I think my skills are improving. I hope you think so too. Send me a comment and lemme know what you think.

I originally wrote this song in 1990. I recorded the song in my home studio at the time, and I performed the vocals. I really liked the song, but my singing did it no favors.

Fast forward some 30 years, and after I retired and decided to get back into writing and recording, I hadn't forgotten about this song. But now, focusing strictly on instrumentals, I decided to rewrite the song without vocals. It's on my second album, Unheard Of, as Loves Gone By.

And even though I like that arrangement, I really like the lyrics and still wanted to do a version with vocals. Enter Dreamtonic's Synthesizer V Studio 2. It's a nice bit of kit that plugs into my recording setup. You give it a set of lyrics and melody line and choose a voice, and it automatically generates your vocals. Yes, it's AI, but the voices are real voices sampled from real human singers. The AI comes in when it's time to merge the voice, the melody and the lyrics and output a vocal line that sounds just like a human. Even better than a human if you compare it to my vocals. ;-p It's taken me 20 hours over two days to learn the package, create a good vocal line and remix the song. It may be AI, but it ain't cheating.

Anyway, give it a listen. Back in the day, I wrote 50+ songs with vocals. Most of them are dated or just plain bad, but there are a few that I'd like to recreate. And I think Synth V Studio 2 offers an excellent solution for doing just that.

I originally wrote this song way back in 1976 when I was still in graduate school. I used to play it at all of the department parties when I still has aspirations of being the next James Taylor.

I recently did an instrumental version of it, but I wasn't happy with it. It needs its lyrics, and it needs a singer, which as you know, I am not.

The more I work with Dreamtonics Synthesizer V Studio 2, the more I'm learning about how to make it sound very realistic. As I mentioned in (Who Says) This Can't Be Love above, the voices are actually samples of real human voices. The AI magic is in the rendering engine. And using SVS2 isn't any where near as easy as saying "Sing me a song." Even though it's pretty amazing what I can do on its own, there are still many hours of tweaking required to get the vocals just right.

If you've followed my music at all, then you'll recognize this song as being on my third album, Worldview. In that version of the song, I performed the vocals and then add heavy effects to "roboticize" them. I liked the song enough to put it on the album, but I wouldn't say I was satisfied with it.

Then comes Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro that I used on (Who Says) This Can't Be Love and Wake Up, Mama! elsewhere on this page. I thought I'd do a remix of Mama's Cherry Pie with a "human" voice that isn't mine to see if it worked any better. And I think it does. The voice is clearer and the lyrics are more distinct. Yeah, it probably has a little robotic tinge to it, but that's OK--that's why it's here under Experimental Music.

I do want to clarify one thing regarding the theme of the lyrics. While "cherry pie" has some unfortunate sexual implications, in this context, "cherry pie" represents comfort and safety. I wrote the song in 2022 not long after I got run over by a pickup truck. I was riding my bike in Allen, TX, and a guy rolled through a stop sign, hit me, knocked me off my bike, dragged me 20 yards or so, then stopped, pinning me beneath the truck. Allen Fire Rescue came and saved me, and I spent 8 days in the ICU, 3 weeks in a rehab hospital and a couple of months rehabbing at home. I wouldn't have made it through all of this if it hadn't for my wife's loving care. Hence, Mama's cherry pie.
